Orientierung

Die küstlerische Arbeit "Orientierung" an der Zeppelin University widmet sich dem Thema der Orientierungssuche und -findung - sowohl spatial, als auch thematisch. Der profanen Beschilderung in den Universitätsgebäuden stellt sie eine Bildwelt und architektonische Modellbaulandschaft zur Seite, deren Fragilität und Exponiertheit, sowie konsumistische Nutzung durch die Passanten zwangsläufig zu ihrem Rückbau beiträgt. Die Bildwelt ist Sammelobjekt, subjektive Erinnerungsstütze und Assoziationsresource und beansprucht dabei einen, im sonstigen Diskurs unterrepräsentierten, Platz; das städtebauliche Konglomerat en miniature vereinfacht die Navigation innerhalb des Horizontes der Institution.

"This temporary installative intervention was set up for a two-day conference the Zeppelin University. The university had asked me to create an orientation system from my artist point of view. Since I am much more interested in questioning a structure and intervening into a designated function taking a critical stand than a functional design I set up hundreds of stacks of loose paper in variable combinations throughout the buildings to give attendees directions on what was happening and where to go - creating a miniature cityscape that could be taken from. Built into the work is the effect that the orientation system is eroding while being used as such, it wears out and the growing disarrangement is degrading the initially precise information into an indiscernible cloud of indications. Since at most conference lectures, images are underrepresented or serve a simplified purpose I counterbalanced that by adding a comprehensive layer of associative images that could be used within the lectures or as collectibles serving as visual reminders of the event."

Die künstlerischen Arbeiten von Ruediger John sind häufig Eingriffe an zentralen Stellen der alltäglichen Lebenspraxis, deren Rituale und inherenten Formen der Wahrnehmung. Gleich ob als Cross- Over zwischen Theater und Performance, als Work-in-Progress mit Schauspielern und Laien im öffentlichen Raum und in der Galerie oder eingeladen in private Räume, um in die dortige "heimische" Umgebung installativ zu intervienieren oder im Umfeld unternehmerischer, ökonomie-geprägter Handlungen und Wertesysteme subversiv tätig zu sein - Irritation als Methode der Wahrnehmungsschärfung und Orientierung des Blickes auf "Nebensächliches", die Nutzung und Umwertung alltäglicher Gegenstände und Situationen, sowie vor allem das Wirken auf Kommunikation und soziale Dynamiken sind wiederkehrende Merkmale seiner Arbeiten.

The artist Ruediger John creates situative, installative, interventionistic, research- and publication oriented works and exhibitions focusing on definitoric and practical aspects in Artistic Research and Systemic Art; he has been teaching at a.o. Universität der Künste Berlin, Zeppelin University, Alanus Hochschule für Kunst und Gesellschaft. Since 1994 he is working on a systemic way of aesthetic interventions into social subsystems; currently conducting cooperative research projects on critical-aesthetic issues in economic and scientific contexts.
